Line Editing

Are you confident that you have resolved big-picture issues but still aren't convinced that the prose is quite right?

You may want a line edit, which resolves issues at the sentence level. Guided by the practical linguistic vision of Orwell, I can elevate your writing to delight, persuade, or inform your readers. Simple changes can improve flow, diction, syntax, tone, and repetition—making your writing more effective.

In a line edit, I’ll suggest fixes for

  • repetition and redundancy
  • imprecise language
  • weak verbs
  • unnecessary passive voice
  • flow
  • deadwood (i.e., extra words that don’t add meaning)
  • inauthentic dialogue
  • tone
  • point of view
  • clichés

You will receive

  • 1 pass of the entire manuscript (or, if you prefer, only a chapter or two to guide you as you edit the rest of the manuscript yourself)
  • In-line edits and suggestions in Word’s Track Changes feature (you can accept or reject these changes in the document)
  • Queries embedded in the Word document with questions, suggestions, and comments
  • A cover letter that outlines global patterns, suggestions, and issues
