Free your writing . . .

. . . by inspiring confidence and avoiding misunderstandings. The right language and style choices can bridge the gap between author and reader.

Do you want to capture US readers' attention?

The problem for many writers and publishers, and especially international ones, is that US audiences are inundated with quality content. If writing isn’t clear and concise enough, they will often dismiss the content and look elsewhere.

Have you ever wondered if US readers will understand your meaning or take issue with a certain phrase? If so, you will benefit from a professional editor’s suggestions.

About Me

Hello, I’m Carissa! I’m a trained freelance copyeditor, proofreader, and line editor with a specialized certificate in copyediting from UC San Diego and line editing training from the EFA. I’m also an experienced ESL teacher who has designed and taught an online writing workshop for employees at AstraZeneca’s Guadalajara office. This experience, combined with my professional editorial training, has made me an expert in English grammar and the problems writers, both native and multilingual, often have with it. It has also attuned my senses to mistranslations, awkward phrasing, repetitive sentence structures, inappropriate tone, incongruent style, poor language choices, incorrect grammar, improper punctuation, and misrepresented facts.

My line editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills are best applied to translations and writings by ESL authors that require localization for US audiences, academic books and articles in the social sciences (particularly in sociology), and novels and short stories (especially those dealing with dystopias, dark humor, magical realism, cultural critiques, science fiction, and anything utterly bizarre).

The primary style guide that I’ve worked with is The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, but I’m also familiar with AP and ASA styles.

Some other topics of interest that I would love to add to my editing repertoire are immigration issues, workers’ rights issues, human rights issues, veganism, animal rescues, travel, linguistics, acroyoga, yoga, health, and fitness. If you’ve written about any of these, I’d be excited to hear from you!

If you think we would be a great fit, please contact me so we can discuss your project and arrange a sample edit.

Please see the services page for a full description of each type of editing.
